We can reveal the family is about to get even bigger this season, with the addition of an alternate-universe version of the Umbrella gang called The Sparrow Academy—but who is this mysterious new crew, and what threat do they pose to the OG siblings? Read on to find out everything we know so far about The Umbrella Academy Season 3. (Caution: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t finished Seasons 1 and 2!)
When is the Umbrella Academy Season 3 release date?
Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy will premiere on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, per a March 13 tweet from the official @NetflixGeeked account.
What’s The Umbrella Academy about?
Based on the Dark Horse Comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy is not your average superhero organization. Its members are seven of 43 children born with mysterious powers on the same day around the world. The seven were adopted by billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who tried to find as many of the children as he could, ostensibly forming a family but really more of an elite superhero force. In Season 1, the now-grown, dysfunctional siblings were brought back together by his death and ended up facing an apocalypse, which they escaped by time-jumping to the early 1960s, when Season 2 takes place. They were also hunted for violating the timeline by The Commission, a time-keeping agency we learn more about in Season 2.
What happened at the end of The Umbrella Academy Season 2?
After time-jumping to the early 1960s to avoid season 1’s apocalypse, the seven siblings were scattered around Dallas, Texas, living separate lives until finding each other again in order to avoid another apocalypse centered around the Kennedy assassination in 1963. In the Season 2 finale, they successfully made it back to their own time—or did they? When they arrived home, they found their previously dead father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, alive and well—and with six other young people, who seem to be Umbrella Academy doppelgangers, and a floating green cube. Another surprise: Sweet, deceased brother Ben, who previously appeared only as a ghost, is also very much alive—but this Ben doesn’t know who his siblings are, and he definitely doesn’t seem to be the same nice guy he was before. Viewers also learned there’s a reason Hargreeves has lived for so long and never seems to age—he’s an alien.
Which cast members will return for The Umbrella Academy Season 3?
All of the original Umbrella Academy members will return: Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castaneda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Ben (Justin H. Min) and Vanya (Elliot Page). In addition, Lila (Ritu Arya), who was revealed to be another of the 43 super children and the adopted daughter of Commission agent The Handler (Kate Walsh, not confirmed to return), will be back after disappearing via one of The Commission’s time-travel briefcases. Colm Feore is also set to return as Hargreeves.
What will happen in The Umbrella Academy Season 3?
According to @NetflixGeeked, here’s the synopsis of what goes down in Season 3: “After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all. But after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them. Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the Universe (something they may have caused)… Now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?” Showrunner and executive producer Steve Blackman gave some hints about the new season during Netflix’s Geeked Week event in June 2021. “What we love is we’re doing a wilder, bigger, zanier season than ever before. I think our emotional stories between this dysfunctional family, we’re just building it up even more,” he said. “There’s some very big surprises with the family this year, there’s some amazing changes that people will love to sort of dig into, and there’s a lot of growth for this family this year in a way that people are just not going to expect.” There will also be “more Easter eggs than ever this year than our previous seasons,” Blackman said. And last season had tons, including 43 hidden Sparrow logos popping up throughout. Another of Season 2’s Easter eggs may be a clue for Season 3 as well: In a Season 2 episode 8 scene in Hargreeves’ office, fans spotted plans for something called the Televator, which in the comics allows transport through different dimensions. Fans speculate this could be how the Umbrella siblings might get back to their own timeline in Season 3.
Will there be new cast members in The Umbrella Academy Season 3?
Yes! The entire Sparrow Academy cast has been revealed, although their characters’ exact powers are still unclear. They include: Marcus, Sparrow Number One (Justin Cornwell): Gifted with smarts as well as strength, he’s a natural-born leader for the Sparrows. Ben, Sparrow Number Two (Min): Although Min is not a new cast member, this alternate version of Ben is definitely a different character. He still has his giant squid-like powers, but he’s also scheming and manipulative, and desperately wants to be Number One. Fei, Sparrow Number Three (Britne Oldford): Fei seems vengeful and angry at the world, but she’s really just looking for a friend. Alphonso, Sparrow Number Four (Jake Epstein): This scarred crime-fighter likes verbal sparring as well as the physical kind. Sloane, Sparrow Number Five (Genesis Rodriguez): Dreamy Sloane would really like to leave the Sparrow Academy and find another purpose—if she only dares to. Jayme, Sparrow Number Six (Cazzie David): A hoodie-wearing outsider, Jayme has a close bond with Alphonso. But she doesn’t really talk to anyone else, probably because they’re scared of her. Christopher, Sparrow Number Seven (Existential Dread Inducing Psykronium Cube): Yep, that’s really the casting credit for the floating green cube. Despite his inhuman form, he’s just one of the Sparrow siblings. We do know his powers: He can turn the temperature down to freezing as well as fill his enemies with dread.
Has The Umbrella Academy Season 3 been filmed yet?
Yes! The cast began production in February 2021 and finished at the end of August. “That’s a wrap on season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, and I’m stoked ’cause I can’t wait for you to see it, and sad because I’ll miss everybody,” Page said in a video posted to the show’s official Twitter on August 28. “I don’t think the world’s ready for this,” Raver-Lampman said in the vid. “I think it’s our best season yet!”
What else do we know about The Umbrella Academy Season 3?
Blackman revealed the episode titles, which are: “Meet the Family” “World’s Biggest Ball of Twine” “Pocket Full of Lightning” “Kugelblitz” “Kindest Cut” “Marigold” “Auf Wiedersehen” “Wedding at the End of the World” “Six Bells” “Oblivion” We can’t wait to see who’s getting married, as well as if “the End of the World” references another apocalypse. And if you’re curious (because we were), a Google search reveals that a “kugelblitz” is a black hole formed from radiation—so that could mean more time/space traveling, or another doomsday. The word means “ball lightning” in German—which could also tie into the third episode’s title, “Pocket Full of Lightning,” as well as the seventh, “Auf Wiedersehen,” German for “goodbye.” Blackman also gave viewers a spoiler-free hint about the title of Episode 6 during Geeked Week: “For our superfans, ‘Marigold’ will mean something to them—it’s something that we’ve set up over the seasons, it’s something in the graphic novels that Gerard and Gabriel did.” We won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read the comics!
