“Happy birthday to the big man!” Heughan penned in a post commemorating McTavish’s Jan. 4 birthday. He also called his fellow native Scotsman “my partner in crime, latte-loving, map-reading, snack-pilfering, delightfully ridiculous, co-writer, co-producer and all-round top (grey) dog!” Heughan’s post included four pics, two of which show McTavish donning a traditional Scottish kilt, and one which appears to show him dressed in streetwear while jokingly sporting a floral arrangement on his head. Heughan ended his post by promising his friend, “We celebrate soon, buddy.” Fans added on their own birthday best-wishes to McTavish with comments like, “You two are the best,” “What I would do to spend a day with these two”—and of course, the traditional Scottish toast, “Sláinte!” As any diehard Heughligan knows, the two actors didn’t just meet and develop a friendship on the set of Outlander (on which Heughan famously portrays hot Scot Jamie Fraser, while McTavish has had recurring roles as both Douglas MacKenzie and William “Buck” MacKenzie); they’ve also become business partners and creative collaborators. During the ongoing—but soon-to-end!—Outlander hiatus notoriously known as Droughtlander, the two co-produced and co-starred in the Starz travelogue series Men in Kilts, inspired by Outlander’s amazing filming locations. (That would be where the “map reading” and “co-producer” from Heughan’s b-day post come in.) They parlayed that success into co-writing a pair of books—Clanlands and Clanlands Almanac—as well as an upcoming second season of Men in Kilts, which is filming in New Zealand and will explore that country’s history of Scottish influence and immigration. During a joint interview in 2021, McTavish told Stylist about his first impression of Heughan, “Sam was really warm, charming and supportive.” Heughan, of course, couldn’t help making fun of their first encounter. “Much like he did with this interview, Graham turned up late, out of breath, saying, ‘Oh god I’m so sorry,’” Heughan joked to the outlet. “That’s why I shook his hand; I’d been waiting so long for him.” Can’t get enough of Heughan and McTavish’s adorable bromance?
