Sanditon is MASTERPIECE’s bold and lavish adaptation of Austen’s final work. While Austen fans are quite familiar with Sense and Sensibility, Emma and Pride and Prejudice, they may be less familiar with Sanditon, which takes place in a seaside town of the same name. Austen, who was chronically ill with a mysterious disease when she started her untitled novel in January 1817, wrote her final lines on March 18, 1817. She died exactly four months later.

He calls upon Lady Denham to back his project. Through a mishap, Tom meets the Heywoods and invites their eldest daughter, Charlotte for an extended stay at Sanditon. Once there, Charlotte finds Lady Denham playing matchmaker for her destitute nephew, Sir Edward, who is determined to seduce Lady Denham’s ward, Clara. The arrival of wealthy heiress Miss Lambe, under Sidney’s guardianship, adds an interesting complication to the town’s goings-on. Eligible men naturally flock to Miss Lambe while Charlotte is intrigued by Sidney. Screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch, House of Cards) has taken Austen’s unfinished work in a cheeky and satisfying direction. Davies will serve as an executive producer on the new seasons as well as write several episodes. Justin Young, who wrote the first four episodes of the first season, will also serve as an executive producer, developing the new seasons. Young will also serve as lead writer.

As you might expect for a British period series, Sanditon was filmed in England—Somerset to be exact. Dyrham Park was used as the exterior for the Sanditon house but most of the interior filming took place at The Bottle Yard. We can speculate that newlyweds Lord Babington (Mark Stanley) and Esther Denham (Charlotte Spencer) and Esther’s brother, Sir Edward Denham (Jack Fox) along with prospective love interest for Charlotte, Stringer (Leo Suter) will also be returning. While we won’t see the character of Lord Babington (Mark Stanley) expect his and Esther’s (Charlotte Spencer) storyline to continue. Stanley, who played Lord Babington in season 1 of Sanditon was unavailable to film the show due to other obligations. Esther’s brother, Sir Edward Denham (Jack Fox) returns and again entangles himself into the lives of his sister and aunt and the town of Sanditon. The character of young Stringer (Leo Suter) won’t be in the new season of Sanditon as the actor was otherwise engaged.
