Season 6’s previous episode, “Temperance,” was heavy on character development, as viewers heard more about the backstories of Fergus (César Domboy), Marsali (Lauren Lyle), Jamie (Sam Heughan) and newcomers to the ridge Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones) and his daughter, Malva (Jessica Reynolds). In “Hour of the Wolf,” we’ll find out more about Young Ian’s (John Bell) past with the Mohawk, as he encounters a member of that tribe while visiting the Cherokee. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) also continues teaching her new apprentice, Malva, about her medical practices with the help of the Beardsley twins (Paul Gorman). But just what Malva’s deal is—is she friend or foe?—still seems to be in question. Here’s everything we learned from the promo for Outlander Season 6 episode 4, “Hour of the Wolf.”

Yes! The trailer for “Hour of the Wolf” begins with former-history-major-from-the-future Brianna (Sophie Skelton) schooling Jamie on what’s to come for the Cherokee—as the local Indian agent, he just secured weapons for them from the British government. “Tell me,” he says to her. “The government will force the Cherokee off their land. Eight thousand will die. They’ll call it the Trail of Tears,” Brianna explains as Jamie looks on, concerned. We then flash to what’s next for Malva, as physician Claire teaches her about using her homemade ether to render patients unconscious. “You want to put us to sleep with that?” Josiah Beardsley asks. “Malva, as my apprentice, needs to practice,” Claire says as Malva gives a strange, somewhat sly smile. “I see now why my father says it’s devil’s work,” Malva says as she puts one of the twins under. Yeah, we don’t trust her one bit. Then, Jamie takes the guns to the Cherokee with Young Ian, who sees something: a Mohawk. “Greetings, Wolf’s Brother,” says the man, who clearly knows Ian. But Ian approaches him aggressively, and the two look as if they’re about to fight. What has happened between them, and why is Ian so upset? As the coming episode is named for him, we’ll likely find out more about Ian’s previous life with the Mohawk, which he’s been reluctant to divulge fully so far.
What happened on Outlander Season 6 episode 3?
Season 6 episode 3, “Temperance,” begins with a burst of action, as a group of village children put a basket containing Marsali and Fergus’s newborn, Henri-Christian, in the river to see if the child, who was born with dwarfism, will float. Roger (Richard Rankin) heroically jumps him to rescue the baby; Jamie later deals with the errant youngsters by asking them to choose between touching the bairn, who they think might be of the devil, or a red-hot poker. They choose the baby, and discover he’s actually not Satan’s spawn. Fergus, however, is still dealing poorly with the child’s condition, drinking too much and blaming himself for not being there to protect pregnant Marsali when she was attacked. Even though Claire assures him Henri-Christian’s dwarfism was not caused by the incident, Fergus relates the tragic story of a boy with dwarfism he knew from his childhood days in the Paris brothel before he met Claire and Jamie. He’s afraid for his son’s future. Marsali, on the other hand, kicks Fergus out (and pours a jug of whisky over his head) when she sees he’s been drinking yet again, telling him about how she watched her mother put up with the same sort of behavior. She also says he doesn’t have to protect the family himself, and reveals that she did the protecting by killing her attacker, Lionel Brown. This only makes Fergus feel worse, and at the end of the episode he attempts suicide, but is stopped by Jamie in one of the most heart-wrenching scenes ever on the show. Meanwhile, Tom Christie agrees to have his hand operated on by Claire, but refuses ether. As he stays the night in the surgery, he and Claire bond while he relates stories of his time at Ardsmuir prison with Jamie. He also admits he doesn’t think she’s a witch. Claire, somewhat unwisely, lends the pious Tom her copy of the bawdy novel Tom Jones, which he later reads a few pages of before deeming it “filth.” Malva and Young Ian spend some time together, and seem to be developing a flirtatious relationship. Malva also relates an important piece of her backstory: Her mother was hanged for witchcraft. After Jamie tells his wife his own tales from Ardsmuir, Claire says she thinks something about Malva’s birth and parentage doesn’t line up, as Tom would have been imprisoned when she was conceived. There’s definitely something shady about the lass—although we do feel sorry for her when Tom uses his newly healed hand to beat her. Roger closes out the episode with a sermon, bringing up the story of Moses floating down the river in a basket, and reminding the villagers to love thy neighbor—but will they? The final scene is of Jamie and Claire, who learn the Boston Tea Party just occurred. “It’s starting,” she says. “The storm, the war, it’s almost here.” Chills!
Are there any Outlander Season 6 episode 4 spoilers?
Season 6 episode 4 will mark the midpoint of this short, eight-episode season, and it’s starting to feel that the biggest action of this as-yet slow-burn season is coming. Book readers will know that Malva is definitely up to something, and we’ll see more about her ambitions in episode 4. “Malva is just enraptured in all of [the physician apprenticeship] and she’s just ready to have a purpose,” Reynolds said in a Starz behind-the-scenes vid. Balfe also said the two women “build a great relationship and bond,” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s very destabilizing for Claire. It’s a really heartbreaking, but a really twisted narrative that they all get embroiled in.” But “Hour of the Wolf” will be primarily focused on Ian, and will hopefully give more info on what happened when he was living with the Mohawk, including more about his wife and baby son. “You are going to learn a lot more about him, so it is a good season for me,” Bell told Digital Spy. “There is a lot of mystique about Ian’s life away from the ridge and if you haven’t read the books and don’t know what is happening, season 6 certainly delves into Ian’s character more so I have a lot to play with.” From the book, the episode title refers to the time of day when the wolves are out hunting, which happens while Ian’s son is being born; Ian kills one of the wolves.
