TMZ obtained the legal document and has revealed that Meghan Markle used her maiden name on her daughter’s birth certificate while her husband Prince Harry retained his HRH styling. Lili’s mother is recorded as Rachel Meghan Markle while her father is listed as The Duke of Sussex, His Royal Highness. On their 2-year-old son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor’s birth certificate Meghan is listed as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex and Harry is His Royal Highness Henry Charles Albert David Duke of Sussex. Although she stopped using Her Royal Highness once she stepped down as a senior royal last year, Meghan is still the Duchess of Sussex and this month published her children’s book, The Bench, using that title. Cosmopolitan reports that while Meghan agreed to drop the HRH from any future legal documents once she and Harry broke away from the royal family and relocated to the US, Harry was born into the family and can retain his HRH status. It is unclear as to why Meghan chose to forego her title of Duchess of Sussex on Lili’s birth certificate. Controversy erupted earlier this year when Meghan claimed that a change to Archie’s birth certificate was “dictated” by Buckingham Palace. When Archie’s birth was registered on May 17, 2019 (he was born on May 6), his mother was called Rachel Meghan Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex on the certificate, with her occupation described as Princess of the United Kingdom. But less than a month later, on June 6, ‘Rachel Meghan’ was removed, leaving only the duchess’s title. When the amendment was spotted, British tabloids suggested a narrative in which the change was a deliberate “snub” to the rest of the royal family, because Duchess Kate‘s name is included on all three birth certificates for the Cambridge children. The reports provoked a firm response from the Sussexes. “The change of name on public documents in 2019 was dictated by The Palace, as confirmed by documents from senior Palace officials,” their spokesperson said.”This was not requested by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex nor by The Duke of Sussex.
