The Duke and Duchess of Sussex traveled from their Montecito, Calif, home to New York City on Monday to attend the 2022 Ripple of Hope Award Gala thrown by Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. The former senior British royals were honored as “Ripple of Hope” laureates, an honor given to folks the organization calls “incredible changemakers for their dedication to social change and making our world a better and more hopeful place.” During the Gala, RFKHR and Archewell Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced a new collaboration. Together, the organizations will launch a new category in RFKHR’s annual Speak Truth to Power video competition to give participating students the opportunity to create videos showcasing women who are human rights defenders. “From Ida B. Wells to Malala, women have long played a crucial role in advancing human rights,” Kerry Kennedy, president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights said in a release. “Acknowledging and celebrating these pioneers—the women who continue to work towards a better, more just world—is key to safeguarding our rights in the future.” Harry and Meghan arrived via private jet before decamping to the posh Carlyle, the same hotel where Prince William and Kate Middleton stayed when they visited New York in 2014. Meghan stepped out wearing a white off-the-shoulder Louis Vuitton gown and spiked black heels. The custom dress featured an overlapping neckline, full-length sleeves and a thigh-high front slit. She accessorized with Princess Diana’s aquamarine ring—the same stone she wore at her wedding reception in 2018, diamond drop earrings and a black bag from Givenchy. Prince Harry let his wife shine wearing a sleek dark blue suit and white shirt. The pair was honored at the charity gala in Manhattan on Tuesday night—just two days before the couple’s bombshell docuseries, Harry & Meghan, premieres on Netflix. Harry and Meghan’s visit to New York comes less than a week after Prince William and Kate Middleton traveled to Boston to attend the Earthshot Awards gala. The Prince and Princess of Wales arrived in Boston last Wednesday for a three-day trip focused on sustainability. Their visit culminated Friday night at the star-studded gala for the Earthshot Awards, a charity inspired by John F. Kennedy’s 1962 address known as the “Moonshot speech.” During their visit, Princess Kate donned a stunning green Solace London dress rented from Hurr, the British equivalent of Rent the Runway. As is often the case with Kate Middleton’s looks, there was symbolism in her choices: The gown was rented to support sustainability and the green color represented the earth—and accidentally matched the carpet at the event! Princess Kate also opted to accessorize with jewelry that once belonged to Princess Diana: a beautiful emerald-and-diamond choker.
