The Apple Watch Series 7 is the latest wearable from the brand and offers the most features. Starting with a 41mm or 45mm edge-to-edge, always-on Retina display. Meaning if your wrist isn’t raised, you can still see the time and widgets (like weather and calendar) right on the face. Thanks to this trait, the Series 7 is most like any other watch since you don’t need to raise your wrist or tap the screen to see the time. It’s also quite vibrant, meaning you can make out what is on the screen even in direct sunlight. If you’re after health or activity features, the Series 7 offers a ton of them: Blood Oxygen tracking, fall detection, and heart rate monitoring are all here. Of course, you’ll want to close your “Activity Rings” since the Series 7 will track steps, exercise minutes and that you’ve been active each hour. You can even share and gamify the experience with other friends or family who have an Apple Watch. The Series 7 can also take an ECG or Electrocardiogram right on your wrist. You can also track a bevy of workouts (from the marimba to a marathon and with time for a yoga session in between). The Apple Watch can even detect a workout and recommend you start tracking one. And since the Apple Watch is a smartwatch, you’ll be able to use apps, take calls, draft an email, ask Siri a question, and respond to messages right on your wrist. The S7 chip inside is fast and efficient, allowing you to open apps and complete a task swiftly. You can expect all-day use, around 17 hours of battery life, from the Series 7. It also comes with a fast charger out of the box, getting nearly 100% in under an hour.
watchOS 9 Brings new Watchfaces, Workout Details and Advanced Sleep Tracking this Fall
Apple used its WWDC 2022 keynote to announce the next generation of software for the Apple Watch: watchOS 9. It continues the naming scheme and brings many new features to your wrist. They’re available in a Developer Beta now, a free Public Beta in July, and for everyone this Fall. Notably, Apple will be providing more metrics within a given workout. Currently, you see active calories, heart rate, and the time spent working out, but now you can use the Digital Crown to scroll and see other stats. Heart Rate Zones are finally coming to the Apple Watch and will be a novel way to track your performance during a given workout — be it running, an endurance cycle, or HIIT. For running workouts specifically, the Apple Watch will also be able to track Ground Contact Time, Vertical Oscillation, and Stride Length. You’ll also have a new workout type: Multisport, ideal for a triathlon since it will use the sensors to determine when you’re switching between workout types. There are also several improvements to sleep tracking with the Apple Watch. It will go beyond just helping you keep a consistent bedtime and overall length of sleep by breaking up the different cycles. So the Apple Watch can now detail how much time you spent in REM, Core, Deep, and time awake. We’re excited to see how this improves the experience and how it stacks up to the likes of Fitbit and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch. And like all the health features on the Apple Watch, you can use your iPhone’s Health app to see a more detailed view. And continuing the tradition of new watch faces, watchOS 9 will bring four new ones: Lunar, Playtime, Metropolitan, and Astronomy. The Playtime face is entertaining with 3D characters that react to movement, touches, and digital crowns. Apple partnered with Joi Fulton to design this face as well. The best watch face update might be that the Portrait face now supports dogs and cats. I cannot wait to see my family dog on my wrist. A dedicated Medications app (also launching with iOS 16) will help you keep track of the medicine you take, remind you to take them, and even alert you if various medications might interfere with one another. Frequent users of Fitness+ will now see callouts from the instructor about the class right on your wrist. Other improvements include an update to Calendar, which adds a week view, and a cleaner, more easy-to-follow notifications. Additionally, the Reminders app is much more feature-filled by allowing you to add notes from your wrist. With input on the Apple Watch Series 6, you can now. And this is just a sampling of the significant features we’re pretty pumped for in town with watchOS 9. And yes, all of these will be arriving on the Apple Watch Series 7, so the investment is well worth it. And if you’re rocking an Apple Series 4 or newer (Series 5, Series 6, Series 7 and SE included) your device will get watchOS 9 as well.
